Can you use just one strand of yarn when knitting with speed stix?

March 4th, 2010 · 3 Comments · Knitting Yarn

I just bought these today and wanted to know if i have to use more than one strand of yarn or is it ok to just use one strand when knitting with these,

Sure you can, but keep in mind that if you’re using fingering (sock or baby) weight yarn on something like a size 19 needle that the fabric is going to be very open and loose no matter what you do. Very large diameter needles are intended, in general, for either very thick or multiple strands of yarn. Single yarns worsted weight and under are going to be more lace like.

dont mind mick, he obvously doesnt know what hes talking about when it comes to speed stixs.

it depends on the weight of the yarn, you can use just about any yarn with size 50 needles. just bear in mind that the work will be loose and more of a lacy look.

You can, but it will most likely give you funky results because they are so big.

Start by looking at some patterns for speed sticks … they are likely telling you to use 3 strands of worsted weight, two of bulky, etc. Once you get a sense of how much weight they want you to use, work up some swatches with various combinations (just using stash yarn) and switch them around until you find out how much weight you want for your project.

When I first started knitting, I was very cautious about substituting yarns but now I’m getting more adventurous and having lots more fun! Don’t forget, you can always rip it out and start over – or just add more in and call it a design element!

    Happy Knitting!
