what does this mean in knitting instructions?

January 29th, 2010 · 7 Comments · Knitting Instructions

i’m working on a knitted pullover and the instructions say K1 row and P1 row for 6 rows. P next K row for turn. what does this mean?

After the K1 and P1 for six rows, you purl a row that you would have knit. This creates a turning row. It sounds like you are creating a hem for the sweater that you turn under when you are finished and stitch down. Check at the end of the pattern, it probably says turn under at the turning row forming a hem, and sew down.

Okay. You knit one row and purl one row for 6 rows, after 6 rows the next row should be a knit row, but the pattern calls for you to purl it to create a turn. This is how I read the instructions you gave. If this still doesn’t sound right I would find a local yarn shop, not the mass retailers of yarn and the staff their should be experienced knitters and would be happy to help you.

I hope this has helped you, don’t get discouraged, keep knitting!

knit1 row and purl1 row repeat knit1 row and purl1 row
    knit 1 row purl 1 row = 6 rows.
Purl the seventh row, which is a row where you turn the knitting part way along a row, ie the divide for the neck when you knit one side first and then do the other side.
this is how I would read the instruction. Hope it’s right

Do standard st st for 6 rows, starting with a knit row. Your 7th row gets purled, however. I’ve done things with a "turning row" before. It makes the turn neater.

Usually this happens at a line that will be folded. When you knit stockinette (k1r, p1r) it will be smooth, where you p instead of k, the body of the knit will bend along the line, where you will turn the fabric over.
