It usually wasn’t a problem until I started knitting in the round
It could be you did not figure the right amount for the cast on thread. Really not being able to see what you have done it is hard to tell. I have knitted on circular needles and have not had that problem but if you could e-mail me with the information on how you cast on I will try to help you. The only other thing you could do would be to put your stitches on a straight needle and then transfer it to the circular that may solve the problem.

Got me stumped there, Do you mean your cast on stitches are too loose and look sloppy?
Are you trying to knit socks? If you are more specific I could help you more. In the meantime try these links.

I enjoy kniting socks in the round, so let me know what you are trying to do.

It is hard to know what your problem is from what you told us. But I am guessing that you meant to say that your cast on is too loose? Which would mean that your had used needles too large for your cast on row? What method of cast on did you use? Some are notorious for being very loose. Each project has specific techniques that are needed, so check that you are using the right one.
Because you did not include a pic of your work, it is hard to know what the real problem is here. I would suggest that you stop in at your lys* and ask them. That is what they are for!

It sounds like you are using a very simple cast on like at this website http://store.nobleknits.com/howtodothcao.html it will always leave yarn over when you are using the method. You will need to learn a different method of casting on such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APSqlPSz1Eo or the cable cast on http://www.knittingonthenet.com/learn/cablecaston.htm or the long tail cast on http://www.bellaceti.com/blog/2009/03/how-to-cast-on/ . These sites have either pictures or video to show you how to do them. I would also suggest that you join ravelry.com as it is a friendly group of knitters and crocheters who are willing to share their knowlegde and it also has a lot of free patterns as well as patterns to purchase.
