Hi
My girlfriend and I want to try knitting for a little hobby and i was just wondering if you guys could help us out. Im new to Knitting but ive done a little Research and found that knitting sticks are different sizes and strings. wool. etc also come in different sizes.
What does this all mean?
What is the easiest knitting pattern for beginners and is there anything you could recommend for us? Sticks, Patterns and wool wise?
We are wanting to knit scarves so any tips on that would be great!
Thank you!
Well, the easiest knitting pattern for beginners is called the garter stitch in my opinion. If you guys want to find out how to knit then just search up garter stitch in YouTube and you’ll get like a billion different tutorials. You can use that pattern to knit a scarf but I don’t reccommend that pattern, the scarves don’t turn out pretty enough or maybe that’s just me, try doing that for a little bit and see how you guys like it.
The pattern that I reccommend but is a little more advanced isn’t called anything but what it is is that you knit one, purl one, knit one, purl one, and repeat. If you want to find out how to purl, then just search that up on YouTube too. This pattern makes a really pretty scarf and it’s really fun to knit. Plus, it actually makes a warmer scarf than the garter stitch. You could knit a little piece of this pattern too then compare with the garter stitch.
The knitting sticks have different sizes because the bigger the sticks, the bigger the stitches so for example, when you’re knitting a scarf with bigger sticks, you’ll need less cast on stitches (cast on stitches on the stitches you make to start your project, search that up on YouTube as well or else you won’t be able to knit anything) because the sticks make bigger stitches which makes the project bigger. The smaller the sticks, the smaller the stitches which means more cast on stitches and more knitting for you. I suggest you guys start out with a size 8mm or 10mm, they’re small but they make pretty stitches and they’re good and easy for beginners. If you start out with bigger sticks, you’ll have trouble keeping the stitches snug, they might come out extremely loose. If you start out with smaller, it might be harder for you to knit because the stitches are tinier and also, they might become too tight.
Wool is just the material used to make the yarn. You can search up different types of yarn on Google of course. Personally, I use Lion Brand (Vanna’s Choice) yarn (you can get that at Michael’s). I don’t know what it’s made of but it’s really soft and the colors are great and it’s easy to knit with.
There are a lot of different patterns here, feel free to check them out:

If you have anymore questions about knitting you could always email me but I don’t think you have too, knitting is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
One more thing, I reccommend getting this little kit:
http://www.amazon.com/Knitting-Learn-Great-Projects-Klutz/dp/1570548617
It can be found at Michael’s. It’s really good, I got it when I first started out knitting and it got me hooked. Check it out [;
Hope I helped. See ya!

Sorry but I have to laugh. The sticks are called needles.
There are some lessons and videos on the internet to learn to knit.
Also at Michael’s Craft stores they have learn to knit kits with a skein of yarn and needles and directions. The different brands of yarns have different sizes of yarns.

Buy yourself a skein of light colored worsted weight yarn. Red Heart acrylic is a nice inexpensive yarn a lot of beginners use. Buy a set of size 8 knitting needles, the shorter the better 10" are nice for beginners.
Go to the link below and learn how to cast on and do the basic stitches. When you are ready you can cast on 30 stitches and knit every row for a simple scarf. If you are confident in purling, do 1 or 2 rows knit and then repeat the same number of rows in the purl stitch.
This is a good way to learn to knit and produce a scarf at the same time.

I agree with Greco and Niki. I’ve been knitting for over 30 years. Lionbrand.com is one of my favorite web sites. It has a great library of free patterns, some very good instructions with pictures that you can print out and videos of different techniques.
I also like knittinghelp.com. Sometimes watching a video of the technique will help you understand better than diagrams or reading instructions from a manual.
Personally, I think that the best yarn to start with is something in a worsted weight (many yarns also label worsted weight yarn with a number 4) You can get something inexpensive in acrylic, so if you mess up you can "frog" it (rip it) easily and start over. (don’t be upset if you find you are doing a lot of frogging at first). Once you get the hang of it, knitting can be very relaxing. Wooden knitting needles (size 8 – 10) are good to start with, they are easier to keep stitches from falling off and you will be able to see results after only knitting a few rows.
I always have my knitting bag with me at work and knit during my lunch breaks and while I am waiting for my husband’s commuter train in the evenings.
