Thanks!!

I use that method as well. Good for you, learning to knit. Ignore the tail (you can sew it into the finished piece right when you finish. Just put the cast-on stitches and needle into your left and start knitting.

It could be you did not figure the right amount for the cast on thread. Really not being able to see what you have done it is hard to tell. I have knitted on circular needles and have not had that problem but if you could e-mail me with the information on how you cast on I will try to help you. The only other thing you could do would be to put your stitches on a straight needle and then transfer it to the circular that may solve the problem.

I’m knitting bibs from "Mason-Dixon Knitting" . In doing the button hole on the bib strap I was asked to bind off 2 stitches in the center of the strap. Now I need to Cast off two stitches on the next row. How do I cast off stitches?

Bind off and cast off are two different terms for the same thing.

The best source of help on the Internet for knitting techniques is KnittingHelp.com. Here’s the link to the bind-off methods shown: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/casting-off

MY favorite bind-off is this: Knit the first stitch to be bound off. Return the stitch to the left needle. Knit one stitch through the back loops of the first and second stitches. Return the stitch to the left needle. Knit through the back loop of that plus the next stitch. Continue across the stitches to be bound off.

The reason that’s my favorite bind-off is that it is super stretchy. Sometimes–usually–the "bring the second stitch over the first stitch" bind-off is just too tight for my personal preference. However, buttonholes are the exception–they are firmer with that method.

I know how to knit, but I think I’m positioning my hands/arm wrong because after a while my right arm toward the elbow gets tired. I see people knitting so fast for such a long period of time and I get tired in about 15minutes.

Any tips on positions, how to knit faster, and exercises to get me pumped again?

Find a copy of "Knitting Around the World", published by Taunton Press in 1993. It’s reprints from THREADS magazine. There are lots and lots of different ways of holding the needles and thread or yarn.

The people who can knit quickly for hours have found or learned methods that work for them. There isn’t one method that works for everyone. Many vary from one method to another according to the application or mood of the moment.

My three speedy favorites are:
1) carrying the yarn "left" and scooping with the right needle rather than wrapping
2) using longer needles and tucking the left one in my armpit to leave both hands free for wrapping and knitting (not dropping the right needle to wrap with the right hand)
3) knitting in the round with purl side "out" and the yarn tensioned on the back of my neck (similar to the method in the movie MIXED NUTS), another scoop rather than wrap method.

There’s *nothing* wrong with getting up and stretching every 15 minutes, or taking a break to do some sort of terribly boring but minimal chore and using the return to knitting as a "reward".

I was given a scarf kit as a gift. I am not a new knitter but this a new technique to me. It is called Open edge cast on , "Invisible Cast on, Open Cast On and Stranded Cast On". There is a waste ribbon that floats under the needle. It looks like that at some point I will go back and pick these stitches to continue on with the work. The knitting is easy but I cann’t get started. I hope someone can explain it better than the pattern.

A provisional cast on can be done on waste yarn or over the cable of a circular needle. As you said, you’ll go back and knit those stitches later.

This site has a video of a provisional cast on. Scroll down to the section called,
"Invisible (Provisional) Cast-On
aka Looped Cast-On"

I also like this technique that uses a crochet hook.

I recently learned how to knit and completed a scarf, I would like to know about how long would it take to knit a beanie hat and gloves because I wanted to give them as christmas gifts and need to know if i have enough time.

I just finished knitting a pair of mittens for my granddaughter (an adult). I started the mittens 2 days ago and finished them. You could estimate how long it would take you to knit the hat and gloves by how long it took you to make the scarf. These shouldn’t take more than a week or two depending on how fast you knit. I think you would be finished by Christmas time even if you are slow knitter.
