I have just started to knit, and I learned how to just do the first row on ONE needle. I have two needles though, but the one needle that has all the stitches is getting filled up and I want it to be longer, so I am wondering, can the yarn hang off of the needle or does it always have to be on the needle?

Yes it always has to be on the needle or you will drop stitches. You may have to go to a longer or circular needles to get the length you want and to keep them from falling off.

I’m using elasticized sock yarn for the first time, and I wondered if you pull the stitches any tighter or looser than knitting with regular sock yarn.

Well, yes and no. If you maintain your usual tension your socks will fit a bit more snugly than if you loosen up. But knitting tightly will really cause the socks to fit smaller than you might expect. In some socks, like baby socks or booties, this may be what you want, but for most adult socks, you want to knit at your usual tension, unless you want something that restricts blood flow.

In addition to what Kaye has said, animal and plant fiber yarns (wool, cotton, etc.) will have a fine, crumbly ash when they self-extinguish (all natural fibers self-extinguish when removed from the source of flame). Animal fibers smell like burning hair, plant fibers like burning paper. Acryllic yarns will not self-extinguish and smell like burning plastic (they smell like what they are), when they are extinguished the end will be a hard knob that does not crumble easily.

I’m trying to work a pattern for a scarf that changes colors every two rows, and the beginning of the pattern says, "Because each colour stripe is only two rows the yarn can be carried up the sides without being cut." I was wondering if you just put the yarn over the needle and continue knitting or is there some way to tie it? can anyone give me some detailed instructions on how to do this, I REALLY want to make this scarf. (Here’s a link to it, if that helps, http://www.ysolda.me.uk/wordpress/index.php/skull-illusion-knit-scarf/ )

When you start the row with your new color drop the color you were just using. Pick up the new color. Twist the new color strand around the old color and just start knitting with your new color. You want to make sure your first stitch is tight enough so the old color doesn’t pull through to the right side. But don’t pull it too tight so your stitches pucker. I hope this helps.

You can do what is called a "Russian Join" (probably the most universal yarn join w/o loosing the integrity of your work – regardless of what type of pattern you’re doing). And it avoids tying a knot and having it pop up where you wouldn’t want it.

You can find a video here:

And here is a picture diagram (very helpful):

The second version is my personal favorite b/c you don’t need to cut the yarn to join the yarn.
