My knitting needles are too small for my pattern. What can I do?

My boyfriend asked me to knit an afghan for him like one that I made a few years ago for myself. I had to buy new needles and accidentally bought US 19 instead of US 35. Can I still use these smaller needles for my afghan? My pattern calls for 58 stitches casted on (finished size approx. 40 inches wide). Do I need to cast on more stitches to compensate? Thanks!

Omigosh, well it really depends on the weight of the yarn as well as the size of the stitches. Have you tried it out? Is it tight? If it is too tight using those size needles, the afghan will be really stiff.

If the yarn will actually do it, yes, you would need more stitches – you will have to make a patch to see how many stitches make 4 inches. You will have to knit a 4-inch long test to make it accurate. On an afghan, the number of rows likely does not matter. Once you see how many stitches makes 4 inches you can multiply by 10 to get the nubmer of stitches for 40 inches – . Also if it is a pattern, rather than just straight knitting, you will have to have the correct multiple of stitches plus the centering factor. For example is the pattern happens every 4 stitches – the number of stitches you cast on would have to be a multiple of 4 plus a centring factor if the pattern uses one.

The may all sound complicated – maybe you should just try to exchange your needles for the correct size.

They look like nothing more than double pointed needles… I could be wrong. I’m only going by a picture I found on ebay, but it looks like any pattern worked in the round would work for these needles…

I dreamed about holding knitting needles in my hands or feet in order to drive my car. What does this mean?

I was driving at dusk. I was either holding one knitting needle between my feet or holding one in each hand. There was no wool though and I wasn’t trying to knit. Weird! Any ideas?

Does anyone out there know where I can Funky knitting needles?

My Mum knitts lots and I want to get her funky knitting needles for Christmas as she saw them in a magazine and really fancied them. She has unfortunately recycled the magazine so I can’t even look at that. Would really apprecaite any websites or any info about this! Thanks.

any store that specializes in yarn and knitting should have them. I’v seen them with lights on the end or bamboo which they say is good because they are lighter to work with . I’m giving you a link to see what we have here in Canada but I’m sure if you check your phone directory you will find lots of places, after all knitting started in UK before we had it here. Best knitting needles and crochet hook types?

I normally have used the Boyd aluminum types and a couple of plastics for both my knitting needles & crochet hooks, but decided to ’splurge’ on a bamboo crochet hook. It’s certainly different. What kind do you like best ? Is bamboo better for more hooks/needles? I also see something called rosewood – is that worth it ? Any other kind out there ? Thanks

Different needle materials work better for certain types of yarn when it comes to knitting needles. Metal needles work best with yarns that are not particularly slippery–wool, acryllic, and such; plastic needles (IMO they squeak in use) will work on these types too, as well as cotton; bamboo, birch, rosewood work best for slippery yarns–alpaca, llama, silk, bamboo, and such. Laceweight yarns of any fiber benefit from using rosewood or birch needles, btw, so you expect to be a lace knitter, these are good choices for that, along with the Addi circulars designed for lace knitting. None of these are cheap, btw.

Crochet hooks are a bit different because they don’t have to actually hold onto the yarns to keep them on the shaft, but the same principle applies. Yes, they feel quite differently in the hands to metal hooks or plastic hooks (again, I’m not a fan of plastic hooks, in this case I find they flex too much in use), so this one is really what your personal preference is and what your pocketbook can stand.

In general bamboo and wooden hooks and needles are more costly than aluminum or plastic ones. They are comparable to the cost of top of the line circulars like Inox and Addis.
