I have even used a smaller needle then switched to a larger size for the body of the hat. I don’t understand what I am doing wrong. I thought that ribbing is supposed to cinch in to create a tighter edge. Please help. I knit quit a bit, but I am really stumped here.

The needle for your ribbing should be at least two sizes smaller than the needle for the hat body. And, yes, starting out with 10% fewer stitches for your ribbing (remember 1×1 rib needs to be a multiple of 2, and 2×2 needs to be a multiple of 4 stitches) in your ribbing is normal.

I knitted this scarf and i finished it and i casted off and everything but now i noticed that its a little too short and i want to make it longer… i only know the basics in knitting so my questions are: can i make up already casted off scarf longer and how?

Have you woven in your ends yet with a big, blunt yarn needle? If so, you’ll need to undo that first. Then pull the end of the yarn back through the last loop of your bind-off (the yarn needle is a big help for loosening the knot) and "frog" (rip it, rip it) your bind-off.

Put the stitches back on your knitting needle, making sure not to twist them. Here’s a video: http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips (Scroll down to "How to re-insert your needle.")

Join a new ball of yarn. There’s a video below the one I just showed you. It’s called "Knit-in Join. Fast and easy," under the heading "Joining the Same Color Yarn."

Then just knit as long as you like and bind off. Rather than just two ends to weave in, you’ll now have four. If you don’t know how, watch "Demo of a small project" at the top of the video page. It includes casting on, binding off, weaving in ends, and more.

I’m involved in historical reenactment and am writing an article about handicrafts. I was hoping some of the knitters here could tell me approximately how many hours it takes them to knit the average mitten, scarf, stocking cap or sweater. Information on any other knit items you have experience would also be greatly appreciated.

<G> Again, it depends on the size of the garment being knit and the size of the yarn being used to knit it. Garments such as socks for most reenactment periods dating prior to the Civil War reached above the knee. Children were the usual sock knitters (as young as 4) and were expected to knit at least an inch a day. A pair of mittens could be knit in about two days, between other chores. Socks would take a couple of weeks, more or less, depending on whether or not they were for an adult or a child. Scarves could take a week. Weskits or vests would take a week or more. Stocking or voyageur caps could take a day to a week to knit (depending, again, on what other work had to be accomplished). Along with the very young, a lot of knitting was done by the elderly who could knit and watch children at the same time, as well as shepherds who could knit while watching their flocks.

For myself, in yarn of a gauge similar to what Colonial socks would have been knit, I can, if pressed, knit a pair of modern adult socks in a week. However, that said, I also run a household, work full time, and care for a small child, a flock of sheep and several cows. I prefer to knit in a much more leisurely fashion. I can also spin enough yarn for socks or mittens in two days.

I just started my first real pattern. I’m knitting a blanket. It’s very basic, all knitting and purling. But for some reason i keep ending each row with an extra stitch. I’ll start out with 90, and by the time i get to the end i have an 91, so I knit 2 together to get rid of it. I’m using circular needles for the first time so idk if im doing something wrong with them. Does anyone know what could cause this?!

The only way you can be adding a stitch is by accidentally picking one up, most likely during your purl row? You can get plastic circles to mark off 20 stitches, 20 stitches, etc., then you can quickly see where you are picking up the extra stitch and correct it. How are you making a blanket using circular needles? I’m a knitter and don’t understand why you would be knitting in the round for a blanket? Have fun. I love knitting.
