knitting with a circular needle question?

March 18th, 2010 · 5 Comments · Knitting On Circular Needles

i want to use a circular needle to knit a baby hat…
the one I currently own is around 45cm long…. are there others on the market that are shorter in length.. or is it possible to knit this hat on a long circular…

small circular knitted items can be knitted with long circular needles using the magic loop method of knitting.

I just looked through my circulars and the shortest one I own is 16 inches — so about 40cm long. I’ve never seen shorter than that. I think for baby hats most people use double-pointed needles.

I have short circular needles that I have used to knit the cuffs of sleeves for a sweater. I think they are about 8 inches long. I find them a little difficult to use in the sense of there is no wiggle room for your grip. Try double pointed needles. I was apprehensive to use them but I found a sock pattern I wanted to make–well it not as hard as it looks.

It is always best to knit with the proper yarn and needles. If you prefer to ‘knit in the round’, I would definitely recommend a 16" circular needle. This makes a beautiful cap with NO seam. One place you can order this needle is from knitpicks.com. I use their nickle plated and wooden circulars most of the time. They are fast on delivery, also, which helps. Good luck with your project and I hope this has helped.
