How many stitches do i need to knit a scarf for my 16 year-old self?

March 18th, 2010 · 4 Comments · How To Knit A Scarf

im knitting a scarf for me and i tried like 40 to 50 stitches but it looked way too wide. And someone told me 15 but i thought it looked too small.

Ok to start with when you cast on stitches it will always look like there’s not enough, but trust me when you start knitting it will expand. Cast on however many you think, like until it’s wide enough, then take off about 4 or 5. Or bout an inch’s worth of stitches. When you knit, trust me, the scarf will come out the right size. Scarves can be any width you want, it’s your scarf, your choice.

It depends on the size needles you use and the type of yarn how wide or narrow it will be. Also it will depend on your gauge. Stitches per inch.
That’s how tight or loose you knit. So what someone else says won’t necessarily be the same for you.

Honey, what kind of yarn do you have and what size needle? Most scarves for warmth are about 6 inches wide, fashion scarves can be anything from an inch to whatever you want. Look at the ball band or label from the yarn and see how many stitches per inch it knits to on what size needles. Usually it gives the stitches in a 4 inch (10 mm) width, so divide by 4 to get the stitches per inch and multiply that number by the number of inches you want to get the number to cast on.

I would try 25, so you can do patterns every 5 stitches (if you want to).
Otherwise, 25 stitches is how many I do for my scarves, on size 6 or 7 needles.
And 5 to 7 feet long is the traditional length of a scarf.
